When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, custom cabinets are often the crown jewel of the project. They offer a perfect fit, unique design, and top-notch functionality. But with so many options out there, it’s natural to wonder: What do custom kitchen cabinets really cost?

As cabinetmakers with years of experience, we understand the importance of making well-informed decisions when it comes to budgeting for your kitchen. In this blog, we’ll break down the key factors that influence the cost of custom kitchen cabinets, provide expert insights, and help you understand how to get the best value without compromising on quality.
1. The Basics: What’s Included in the Cost of Custom Cabinets?
Custom kitchen cabinets are designed and built to suit your space and style preferences, which means their price will vary depending on several factors. When we talk about the cost of custom cabinets, it’s important to remember that there are multiple components to consider:
Design and Consultation Fees: Many cabinetmakers charge for the design phase, where they work with you to create the perfect layout, select materials, and finalize the look of your kitchen.
Materials: The choice of materials is a major factor in the final cost. Cabinets can be made from solid wood, plywood, MDF, laminate, or other materials, each with its own price range.
Cabinet Construction: The quality of craftsmanship, such as dovetail joints or reinforced plywood, will affect the overall price (here's a guide that get's more into detail).
Finishes and Hardware: Premium paints, stains, and custom finishes will increase the cost, as will high-end hardware like handles, hinges, and pull-outs.
Installation: The cost of installation varies depending on the complexity of the job and whether it’s done by the cabinetmaker themselves or by a subcontractor.
2. Average Cost of Custom Kitchen Cabinets
Now that you know the major factors influencing the price, it’s time to look at the numbers. On average, custom kitchen cabinets typically cost between $500 and $1,200 per linear foot, but this can vary based on the material, design complexity, and other factors we’ve discussed.
To give you a clearer picture, here are some general price ranges:
Budget-Friendly Custom Cabinets: $500–$700 per linear foot. These cabinets will be made from less expensive materials like MDF or laminate, with simpler designs and standard finishes.
Mid-Range Custom Cabinets: $700–$1,000 per linear foot. For this price, you can expect high-quality plywood or wood veneers, along with a more complex design, some custom storage solutions, and premium finishes.
High-End Custom Cabinets: $1,000–$1,200+ per linear foot. These cabinets will be made from solid wood, feature intricate designs, custom details, and high-end finishes. This range is typically reserved for luxurious kitchens with premium features and high-end hardware.
The way the process worked in our shop was to have an initial conversation with our customer and look at a few of their inspiration photos. We would then use a lineal foot price to create a very generalized budget. For example, painted inset cabinetry was the most labor-intensive for us, so that would have the highest lineal foot price. On the other hand, say alder with just a natural finish would be the lowest (less labor-intensive). We would then say, "to create something similar to these photos for your layout, it would be $xxxx. Is that within your budget?" If yes, we would proceed to a much more detailed estimate. If not, we would explore other ways to shave costs (instead of using real walnut, using a stained maple, for example. Switching away from inset, etc). This is how the custom cabinet pricing process generally works.

3. Factors That Affect the Cost of Custom Kitchen Cabinets
Several key factors determine how much custom kitchen cabinets will cost. Let’s break these down in more detail.
Design Complexity: More Details = More Cost
The complexity of your design will directly affect the cost. Simple, clean lines with minimal detailing will cost less than highly detailed, intricate designs. For example:
Flat-Panel Doors: These cabinets have a clean, modern look and are generally less expensive than traditional raised-panel or custom-carved doors.
Detailed Moldings: Adding crown molding, custom carvings, or intricate woodwork can raise the price significantly.
Custom Storage Solutions: Pull-out shelves, lazy Susans, or built-in organizers are popular additions but can add to the cost due to their complexity and additional labor required for installation.
If you’re looking to save, try simplifying your design. Going for a minimalist approach can not only lower costs but can also give your kitchen a timeless, elegant feel.

Cabinet Size and Layout: The Bigger, the Costlier
The size and layout of your kitchen will have a direct impact on the cost of custom cabinets. Larger kitchens require more cabinetry, and the more cabinets you need, the higher the cost. Additionally, unique layouts or configurations, like corner cabinets, islands, and floor-to-ceiling units, may require specialized designs, which can drive up the price.
Tip: If you’re working within a tight budget, consider focusing on key areas (like the kitchen island or upper cabinets) and making adjustments to the overall layout to reduce costs.
